HostGator can be considered for a basic business website or WordPress publication, but choose the current product carefully. Its documentation spans older and newer hosting arrangements. A familiar plan name does not guarantee the same capacity or tools described in an old review.
If this operating setup fits your needs, check the current HostGator offer while you compare the requirements below.
Check the exact product
HostGator sells shared, WordPress, VPS, and dedicated products. The current scalable-shared documentation and sales page describe tiered website and storage allowances. Other help pages can reflect legacy plans.
Use the selected checkout and current product documentation as the purchasing reference. Ask support to resolve any inconsistency. Do not assume Hatchling still means precisely the same allowance as a dated tutorial.
Where shared hosting fits
A straightforward blog or brochure site can be a reasonable shared-hosting workload. Start with a lightweight theme and a restrained plugin set. Several interactive applications, a busy store, or large recurring imports can create different resource needs.
A website allowance is not a guarantee of isolated resources for every site. Confirm storage and workload restrictions. Keep enough budget for content, maintenance, and the site’s other services rather than buying capacity you have no plan to use.
Pricing evidence and limits
The October 5, 2026 extracted sales page displayed placeholder prices in some locations. This review therefore does not invent a current introductory tariff. The official price chart provides regular USD totals, while the account’s Renewal Center provides the applicable renewal quote.
For example, the checked regular-price chart listed one-year Hatchling at $158.27. Confirm current product applicability, tax, and your chosen term before treating a public chart as an account invoice. Introductory discounts apply to the initial term, according to the sales policy.
Keep the domain renewal, email trial, backup subscriptions, and other extras separate. A temporary benefit is not the ongoing operating cost.
Backups: identify what you actually have
The current Basic Weekly Backup guide describes site-level files and database coverage with one restore point at a time. New points overwrite previous ones, and email data is excluded. That is not a multi-month archive of every service.
HostGator also documents Xcitium, Jetpack, CodeGuard, and full cPanel backup methods. Their scope and availability differ. Do not combine all of those features into a claim that they are included in one basic plan.
Take independent copies before major edits, and know how a restore works. A database rollback can remove newer posts, registrations, or orders. Match recovery frequency to how much work the business can afford to lose.
Migration is not one universal free service
The sales page mentions a WordPress migration tool. The professional migration guide describes a separate service, with an official checked charge of $149.99 for a single website and eligibility-based free cases for certain VPS or dedicated terms.
Ask which path applies before buying. A self-service tool, professional website migration, and email migration are different tasks. Identify external mail records and integrations, and keep the source host active until the new site passes checks.
Domain and email separation
HostGator’s DNS guide explicitly says registration is separate from hosting and a domain transfer is not required to use its host. That gives you flexibility to keep the domain elsewhere.
Changing nameservers transfers DNS responsibility. Preserve the whole zone, especially mail routing and authentication. A website move should not unintentionally replace the email provider.
Alternatives
Bluehost provides another hosting offer with its own tier and support distinctions. SiteGround offers a WordPress toolkit with explicit renewal pricing and different backup rules. WPX documents a managed scope, while WordPress.com provides a platform workflow.
Compare required features and recurring totals. I have not tested performance or support for this review, so it does not claim an independent fastest or most reliable winner.
Frequently asked questions
Is every migration free?
No. Tool-based and professional services have different scope and conditions.
Must I transfer my domain?
No. Registration can remain separate while DNS connects the site.
Does weekly backup protect email?
The current Basic Weekly guide says it does not. Plan mailbox recovery separately.
The practical verdict
Shortlist HostGator if the verified current plan fits a modest site and its full recurring cost works. Resolve documentation differences before purchasing, establish independent recovery, and keep the application simple.
